The "Pig Butchering" Crypto Scam

How organized syndicates use fake romance, friendship, and fabricated trading platforms to drain life savings.

What is Pig Butchering?

The term comes from the practice of "fattening up" a pig before slaughter. Scammers build a deep emotional connection (friendship or romance) with a victim over weeks or months, before introducing them to a "lucrative" cryptocurrency investment platform.

The Scale of the Problem

According to the FBI IC3 2023 report, investment fraud involving cryptocurrency reached $3.94 billion in losses, a 53% increase from the previous year. This is not a niche problem; it is an industrialized criminal enterprise.

How the Scam Works: Step-by-Step

  1. The "Accidental" Contact: You receive a text message from a wrong number ("Hi John, are we still meeting for golf?"). When you politely correct them, they strike up a conversation.
  2. The Grooming Phase: Over weeks, they chat about life, build trust, and casually mention their financial success, often attributing it to a relative who is a "trading genius."
  3. The Introduction: They show you their profits and offer to teach you. They guide you to download a legitimate app (like WhatsApp or Telegram) and then direct you to a specific trading website.
  4. The Fake Platform: The website looks real. It has charts and customer service. You deposit a small amount ($100), and immediately "make" a profit. You might even be allowed to withdraw it once to build trust.
  5. The Slaughter: Convinced it works, you invest large sums—often taking out loans. When you try to withdraw the big money, the platform demands a "tax" or "fee" upfront. You never get your money back.

Red Flags to Watch For

  • Unsolicited Messages: Random text messages from attractive strangers who want to be friends.
  • Pushing Crypto: Any online friend/romantic interest who steers the conversation toward cryptocurrency investing.
  • Unknown Platforms: Being directed to a trading platform you've never heard of, or an app that isn't in the official Apple/Google app store.
  • Guaranteed Returns: Promises of steady, high returns with no risk.
  • Taxes Paid in Advance: Legitimate platforms deduct taxes/fees from your balance. They do not ask you to wire more money to pay a tax before a withdrawal.
