Gift cards are the currency of choice for many scammers because they are untraceable, irreversible, and instantly redeemable globally.
The Scam
A scammer poses as an authority figure (IRS, police, utility company) or a family member in distress. They demand immediate payment to resolve an urgent issue (unpaid taxes, bail money, utility shutoff). The catch? They insist the payment must be made via gift cards (Target, Apple, Google Play, Steam).
They instruct you to go to a local store, buy the cards, scratch off the back, and read the PIN numbers to them over the phone.
The Golden Rule
No legitimate business or government agency will ever demand payment via gift cards. Ever.
